DHARAVI CENTRE
The centres - at Mukund Nagar and Dhorwada - saw the culmination of one more year of service to the people of the community. The centre at Dharavi has been in existence right from the inception of CORP.
Regular Programmes and Activities: Creches, pre-school education, nutrition and health programmes, community awareness, programmes, parents' meetings, a nature group and a senior citizens' club are the chief activities throughout the year.
Sports: Children, parents and senior citizens (250 in all) took part. In various events organized in January. Prizes were distributed to the winners.
Health Mela: The centres took part in a health mela on March 11, at the Urban Health Centre, organized by the NGO Forum of Dharavi, of which CORP is a part. A Poster Exhibition and street plays were put up.
Women's Day: In the International Women's Day celebration conducted at Thane and Dharavi, women participated in a rally and a cultural programme.
Community Awareness: Awareness Programmes every month on health and social issues like cleanliness, T.B., cancer, tobacco, AIDS, malaria, first aid, consumer rights, nutrition, savings schemes, etc., were conducted throughout the year.
Rose Day: Children of the centre celebrated 'Rose Day' on 23rd September, by offering roses to one another
Dandiya Raas: On the eve of Dassera (October 3) children participated in a Dandiya Raas, dancing to lively tunes and rhythmic beats and the clacking of sticks.
Training Programme : A two-day educational training programme on the Quality of Life was conducted on December 2nd and 3rd. Forty women participated. Topics covered were: AIDS, cleanliness, self-employment schemes, gynaecological issues etc.
Senior Citizens Club: Members of the senior citizens club of both centres (Dharavi and the Shalom Centre) met on 17th December to celebrate Christmas. Time was spent in prayer and devotion, singing, cultural programmes and games. Gifts were presented.
Family Counselling Centre: This caters to women in distress. One hundred and twenty cases were registered, of women from various parts of Mumbai. Awareness programmes on women's rights and on legal aid was conducted in different slum areas. Two sessions on pre-marital counselling were also conducted for youth of the community.
