DURGADEVI CENTRE
The center at Durgadevi functions as a day care center for street children. The center identified the category of street children as beneficiaries mainly as they are vulnerable in all ways. The center is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to those who are exploited by the masses, the forgotten and deprived lot of the society. The center has the potential to be a positive place for children who have no home and no one to love them. The children are also given shelter at our center at Reay Road.
At the center there are ways to motivate the children to come and spend a while and to feel a sense of belonging to some sot of a family. The atmosphere created through the educational and service system puts the children in the drivers seat. There are disciplinary patterns and educative programmes for the purpose of bringing about changes in children’s life. The changes are visible in those who attend the center regularly. They maintain discipline to a great extent, take care of personal hygiene and have a regular check up of all their bad habits.
There are 20 children at the shelter for boys and an average of 30 to 40 boys attend the day care center programmes. In the last 10 years of its existence, it has touched the lives of 12000 street children. The main components of our programme is :
- Identification of street children found at risk of disorganization, abuse or exploitation
- Facilities for shelter and hygienic living
- Provide health care and access to treatment facilities
- Provide nutrition support to maintain the requisite level of physical and mental efficiency
- Offer facilities for literacy and life education and awareness on personal hygiene and health issues
- Offering counseling, guidance and referral services for upgrading the quality of life of street children
- Provide recreation for healthy growth
- Conduct outings and camps for experiential learning
- Make efforts to re-instate children in their families and facilitate their participation in the formal primary education
- Protect children against all forms of abuse and exploitation
- To provide vocational training in screen printing, weaving and promote entrepreneurship for income generation
Mobile Dispensary
CORP also runs a mobile clinic with a qualified doctor once a week. The clinic visits eight different locations during the month and on an average 30 to 40 children are examined every day and are given medicines as per their ailment. Through the visits new contacts are established with the children who are then taken up at the day care center programmes and some for the night shelter.
