SHALLOM CENTRE
This centre for differently challenged children, located at the Matunga Labour Camp, has been functioning for over thirteen years. It runs sponsorship programmes for ninety-one differently abled children (fifty-five hearing-impaired, thirty-five physically handicapped, two mentally challenged). It also has a Balwadi programme for sixty children. The sponsored children are given uniforms, books, bags, and umbrella every year.
Sports: Children took part in various events 23rd January. Prizes went to the winners.
VBS: Eighteen physically challenged children were taken to the Panvel Yusuf Meharali Centre to attend the Vacation Bible
School conducted from January 9th to 12th. They also attended the VBS programme conducted at Matunga from the 4th to 7th November.
Lions Club Programme: Children participated in the group and solo dance programme organized by the Lions Club on 16th December. Prizes were won for the best performance. Trophies too were awarded.
Family Life Education : A three-day training programme on Family Life education for girls was conducted from 28th to 30th January. Twenty-five girls took part.
Excursion : Fifty children were taken on an excursion to Kolhapur from the 20th to 23rd February. They enjoyed the trip and visited historical sights.
Health Awareness : A four-day health awareness programme on various health issues like AIDS, T.B., drugs and the environment was conducted from the 5th to 8th February.
Picnic: Forty balwadi children were taken for a picnic to the Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, on 29th March.
Vacation Classes: Classes in drawing, crafts, and mehendi were conducted during the summer vacation. Sixty children
attended.
Training Programmes: A two-day training programme for couples - on Nutrition and on self-employment schemes was conducted on 21st and 22nd August. Nineteen couples participated.
Mount Mary Fair: On 18th September, thirty-one children were taken to Mount Mary Fair, Bandra. The children enjoyed the various "rides".
Counselling: In November, a pre-marital counselling session was organized for the youth, both girls and boys.
Rangoli Competition: On 29th October, a rangoli competition was organized for women of the community.
Christmas celebration : A Christmas celebration was organized on 18th December for children. A lunch and cultural programme were the highlights. Children took part, singing and performing in skits and dances. They left bearing gifts.
Vocational Training : Ten children have been sponsored for vocational training in computers, embroidery, tailoring and "beauty" culture.
