SHARANAM SHELTER FOR GIRLS
The shelter for girls was begun in 2000, aimed at collecting and protecting those whose joys of childhood and the rights
to normal living had been crushed. The Centre is tribute to their resilience and independence. We felt it was every child's right to nutrition, health education recreation and to participate in decision-making. Twenty-nine children reside here and all go to school. A monthly check-up is organized for them. Besides academics, they are coached in dance and computers.
Vacation Bible School: Children attended the VBS camp conducted at the Panvel Yusuf Mehrauli centre from the 9th to 12th January. They got to learn more about the Word of God.
Lion Club Programme: On the 16th February, the children took part in the Lions' Club cultural programme. They performed the Dhola re Dhola dance and won a prize.
Hope Run: On the 31st March, the children took part in the Hope Run organized by Magic Bus. The run was up to four kilometres and Haseena won the prize.
Picnic: On the eve of Raksha Bandhan, 12th August, the children were taken for a picnic to Khopoli. They enjoyed the waterfall, much greenery and the mountains.
Music Festival: On the 24th August, a music festival was organized at Dharavi. A musical item using thrown-out items like bottles and plastic was presented to the children.
Mount Mary Fair: On the 18th September, children were taken to the Mount Mary Fair. They enjoyed the various rides and games.
Vacation Camp at Naigaon: The childrsn were taken for the vacation camp at Naigaon from the 21st to 24th October. The place has a beautiful garden, and the children enjoyed a variety of games, being taught new songs and games. They participated in a cultural programme too.
Water Kingdom: On the 27th October, these children were taken to the Water Kingdom at the Marve beach. They enjoyed the various rides and games. The trip was sponsored by Mr Deval Sanghvi
Air Trip: On the eve of Children's Day, two children were taken for a two-hour air ride, sponsored by Magic Bus. Those who had done well in their studies were taken for the trip.
Dance Class: Children are taught dance at the Centre. In the exam for the first year of Classical Dance, ten girls took part and all passed.
Competitions: During the year, children took part in various competitions essay writing, speech, singing and drawing conducted by the municipal school and the Sunday school. Many children won prizes in the different events.
Christmas Celebrations: On the 18th December, the children celebrated Christmas. A party was organized and presents given.
A "Christmas Tree" was held on the 21st December. Children took part in a dance and drama programme.
Excursion: From the 25th December to the 1st January, the children were taken on a trip to Kharagpur and Kolkatta. They attended the wedding of their sponsor (Deval and Neera Sanghvi) and enjoyed the various historical sights
