THANE CENTRE
The Jeevan Jyoti Centre at Kailash Nagar
Centre came into existence in 1989 and has since evolved.
Today, three centres operate - one at Kailash Nagar
and two at Indira Nagar: Vidhya SagarVikas Kendra and
the Boudh Mandir centre.
Regular Programmes and Activities: Pre-school
education, creches, tuition classes, non-formal education,
health programmes, nutrition camps, sponsorship programmes
for 250 children, community awareness programmes, youth
groups, tailoring classes and mahila mandal programmes
are conducted throughout the year.
Vacation Bible School: A four-day camp
(January 8th to 11th) was held at the Yusuf Meharali
Centre, Panvel. A hundred children participated. In
a similar camp at Thane, held October 29th to November
1st a hundred and tweleve children took part.
Excursion: Eighty children were taken on
an excursion to Kohlapur from February 20th to 23rd
as part of an educational trip.
Sports: Two hundred children participated
in various sports events conducted in January. Three
events were held in each group and the first two winners
were given prizes. Events like "lemon and spoon"
race, a sack race, and other running races were held.
Cancer Camp: In January, a cancer detection
camp was conducted with the help of the Tata Memorial
Hospital. Seventy
women participated and eight were called for a follow-up.
Pulse Polio Camp: Polio drops were inserted
into the mouths of six hundred children on January 5th
at a pulse polio camp held.
Monte Test Camp: In February, a Monte test
camp was held detect TB in children. Ninety-eight children
were examined and twenty-one were found to be TB-positive.
General Medical Camps: As part of the community
development programme, a general medical camp was conducted
in March. Three hundred people came to be examined.
Training Programmes: In March was conducted
a five-day training programme on the Quality of Life.
Twenty couples participated. Also, a two-day programme
on Child Labour. A hundred and twenty children took
part. Thirty-five women attended a four-day training
programme on food preservation, while forty women took
part in a two-day education programme on the Quality
of Life.
Women's Day: On March 8th, three hundred
women from the different centres celebrated International
Women's Day at a Thane Municipal school. Women had gathered
here for a rally on women's rights, followed by a cultural
programme.
Mahila Mandals : Under the banner of the
Indira Mahila Mandal are registered seven groups (two
hundred members in all).
Income Generation: Twenty girls in the
tailoring classes make a variety of products bags of
jute, rexin and cloth; quilts; garments; doormats; shatranjes;
and dusters. Forty dozen dusters and 180 doormats were
made.
