VIRAR CENTRE
The Virar centre is a rural project of
CORP. The area is populated by tribals, most of whom
are illiterate. Their main occupation is agriculture
and brick making. There are no proper schools and hospitals;
so, naturally, with education and health facilities
lacking, the people are uneducated and easily fall prey
to ill health.
Regular activities: Activities include
the balwadi for children, health programmes and community
awareness programmes and the mahila mandai.
Sports:ln January, a sports event was conducted
for the balwadi children, school-going children and
women. Prizes were given to the winners.
Medical camp:On the 5th March, a medical
camp was organized with the help of the Municipality.
Five hundred and thirty people were examined.
Nutrition day: On the eve of Nutrition
week, nutrition day was observed (26th September). Children
of the balwadi celebrated it as a "vegetable"
day; they brought from their homes different vegetables.
A cooking competition was organized for the women the
preparation of a nutritious diet at a low cost. Prizes
were given to the winners.
Diwali celebration: The Centre celebrated
Diwali in October. Children were given snacks made at
the centre. They played with firecrackers and wore new
clothes.
Eye awareness: On the 28th November, an
eye awareness programme was conducted in the community.
Emphasis was laid on the much prevalent problem, cataract.
Precautionary methods, detection procedures and treatment
were suggested.
Community awareness: On the 25th November,
an awareness programme on diabetes and asthma was conducted
in the community, as this is a common problem in that
area.
Christmas: Children at the centre celebrated
Christmas by taking part in cultural programmes. A party
was held and gifts given.
